Music Business and Technology Major

Let’s study ICT at a music college!
In the spring 2024 academic year, Tokyo College of Music will establish Music Business and Technology (MBT) Major where students specialize in ICT as well as music. In addition to its achievements in music education and research steadily build up, Tokyo College of Music seeks to improve the ICT field and contribute to today’s culture and society. Through the research and dissemination of the advanced arts and business, which combine music and ICT, this major will nurture capable people well-versed in music and ICT.

Human resource development

In the newly-established MBT major, students will specialize in ICT skills including programming, web designing, management, recording techniques, game creation, etc. while using music as its core intellect. Students will play an active role not only in the field of music but also in the entertainment and information industries. From the perspective of “music × digital technology,” this major will produce aspiring entrepreneurs who create new activities beyond the existing industrial structure.

Expected career paths after graduation

Music-related companies and organization (music-related business such as management)/ music productions/ concert halls/ various culture centers/ various media/ various information technology companies (programming, system administration, web programming, web designing, game creation, etc.)/ ICT-related companies/ game production companies/ general companies (general office workers with excellent IT skills), etc.

Educational program

The Music Business and Technology Major has two major subjects: Music and ICT.

About Music

Because the entrance examination does not have any performance component, those who have not specialized in music can enter the program and learn basic musical theories and composition. Students will learn sound techniques using a computer, recording techniques, and music production step by step. As electives outside the major subjects, various courses unique to a music college will be available, including Western, Japanese, and other ethnic music courses.

About ICT

This major draws up a curriculum for systematic education from the first year, and students will study various ICT skills resulting in programming qualifications, Fundamental Information Technology Engineer Examination, and so on.

Upon graduation

By utilizing Music and ICT they have studied, students will create graduation projects such as composition using DAW, event planning, game or application creation, web designing, corporate network planning, etc. We anticipate that students will spearhead unknown fields that the faculty is yet to imagine.
