Message from the Chairman and President
Since its founding in 1907 by Professor Yonejiro Suzuki, Tokyo College of Music (TCM) has produced many outstanding musicians and people who support music culture, backed by its founding spirit of “compatibility between academia and pragmatism,” “contribution to society through music,” and “internationality.” The College, the longest-established private music school in Japan, will soon celebrate its 115th anniversary and will continue to transform itself in pursuit of even greater leaps forward.
The “Vision of Tokyo College of Music,” formulated in 2019, expresses our strong philosophy and will to explore new horizons of music culture as a core player of Japanese music culture. Along with the founding spirit, we consider it of paramount importance to develop the best possible student learning environment and the foundation for the creation of a new music culture in order to realize the ideals of this vision. To this end, we opened the Nakameguro-Daikanyama campus in April 2019 equipped with advanced music practice environments, state-of-the-art recording studios with digital media, and a concert hall. In addition, an attached high school was relocated to the Ikebukuro campus in 2020, and a new girls’ dormitory opened in 2022. Furthermore, the facilities and functions of the attached library and kindergarten were improved to create a new platform as a center of music culture in the capital city of Tokyo.
The recent rapid globalization and diversitification, plus the advent of advanced technology, have dramatically transformed the world. In addition, the worldwide spread of the new coronavirus forced humankind to undergo a major shift in values and social life. While the significance of the musical arts is becoming even more important as global change accelerates, the widening economic disparity and declining birth rate are not only posing a serious threat to the academic environment for students, but also to the maintenance of the College’s facilities and equipment.
Therefore, we would like to ask for the support of our alumni and those who are invested in the education, performance, and research activities of the Tokyo College of Music so that we may promote and improve the education and academic training of our students.
Your cooperation would be greatly appreciated.
Chairman Keiichiro Maruyama
President Ichiro Nodaira
