Instrumental Major – Piano

All courses are designed to help students improve their basic skills and discover their musical characteristics and areas of expertise. The common policies are “to polish each student’s performance to the limit in order to convey the intention of a work to the audience,” and “to have the knowledge to calmly judge how a work projects the emotions and intentions of a human being.” Based on these two key elements of performing arts, students not only train their physical performance but also improve their ability to analyze and create works, while maximizing “each student’s affinity for the artists.” Piano lessons are available from multiple teachers upon request, and opportunities for collaboration with other majors increase dramatically in Chamber Music and Collaborative Piano Practicum starting in the second year.
In addition, the program offers a variety of courses, including Music Interpretation and Topics in Method of Piano Instruction. Courses are taught by performers and instructors from Japan and abroad. Lessons by international professors, and opportunities for short-term study abroad are also available.

Piano

Students learn the fundamentals of piano through on-stage performances, competitions, and practical performance applications. In private lessons, students can acquire a wealth of knowledge and skills to become future instructors.
School concerts are held for auditioned students of all years to perform. Third-year students with outstanding results in regular practical examinations have a chance to perform at the Spring Concert.

Pianist Performance Course

This course is designed to cultivate reading speed and precision while thoroughly studying a long performance program and various styles of music.
Students who achieve excellent results in regular practical examinations perform off-campus at the Tokyo College of Music Piano Concert.

Creation and Piano Performance Course

In addition to private piano lessons, students can improve their ability to read music and present their works by studying composition.
The required courses of Creative Practice (Composition) and Composition Theory Basic (including harmony, counterpoint, and orchestration) are taught according to the proficiency levels of students and mainly through private lessons by professors of Composition (Artistic Music Course).
